PS 12 Dress Code & Dress Expectations

In an effort to promote a more effective learning environment, foster school unity and pride, improve overall student performance, and distinguish our students from other students in our community, the PS 12 School Leadership Team has instituted a school uniform policy. All students of PS 12 must wear the school uniform Monday through Friday. There is no dress-down day.

Required School Uniform

  • Purple polo shirts with PS 12 school crest
  • Grey or black bottoms and jumpers
  • Black shoes or sneakers
  • All sweatshirts, sweaters, and hoodies worn over shirts must be black or grey
  • PS 12 hoodies may also be worn

Prohibited Forms of Dress

  • Hats or caps (except headwear worn for religious observance)
  • Clothing with references to drugs, alcohol, sex, violence, racism, or gang affiliation
  • Revealing clothing that does not fully cover the torso, undergarments, or private body parts, including see-through garments
  • Flip-flops, crocs, or sandals with exposed toes
  • Sunglasses worn indoors

Dress Code Enforcement

If a student comes to school wearing clothing prohibited by the Dress Code, the student’s parents will be notified. The student may be subject to the interventions and disciplinary responses outlined in the Discipline Code and will be expected to make appropriate adjustments to their clothing (e.g., turning shirts inside out or borrowing temporary clothing until the end of the school day).

Dress Expectations & Inclusivity

Our school promotes a welcoming and inclusive environment where students have the autonomy to express themselves through their attire, guided by the principles of safety, respect, and equality. In accordance with NYC DOE policy, students have the right to determine their own attire unless it poses safety risks, disrupts learning, or violates anti-discrimination policies.

Our dress code is gender-neutral and ensures that all students are treated equitably and without bias. Attire containing discriminatory language, inappropriate imagery, profanity, obscenity, nudity, or references to violence or gang affiliation is strictly prohibited. Revealing clothing that does not provide full coverage of private body parts is also considered inappropriate.

By adhering to these guidelines, we aim to foster a sense of belonging, acceptance, and respect for all members of our school community while maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment.
